Career HISHIYAMA Yutaka joined the Science and Technology Agency, the Prime Minister Office in 1985. He served at the Embassy of Japan in Germany as the First Secretary in charge of Science, Technology and Environment from 1995 to 1998. From 2001 to 2003, he was the Director, the Office of Bioethics and Biosafety, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and in charge of ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) in terms of cutting-edge life sciences. He assumed to the Director, Life Science Division in 2007 and worked on life sciences policy until 2009. From 2013 to 2015, he was Deputy-Director General, Office of Healthcare Policy, Cabinet Secretariat. He assumed to the Senior Director of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) on the day of the establishment of the Agency in April 2015, then promoted to the Executive Director of AMED on April 1, 2017. In January 2019, he assumed to the Assistant Minister for Cybersecurity, IT Management and Evidence-based Policymaking in the MEXT. In July 2019, he assumed to the Assistant Minister/Director General, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, and he took a position of Director General of National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) in October 2020.
