It is important to maintain a liaison and cooperate with domestic and overseas research organizations and researchers who are conducting research in the field of S&T policy.
NISTEP therefore exchanges information with overseas organizations, engages in joint research, accepts researchers, sponsors international workshops, holds seminars featuring renowned Japanese and foreign researchers, and gives lectures and presentations at international conferences and research societies
NISTEP carries out science and technology foresight intended to contribute to the consideration of the next Science and Technology Basic Plan. At this workshop, experts from the UK and Germany were invited to present their latest activities, and opinions were exchanged on the design and implementation of NISTEP foresight under way. Participants in the workshop numbered 125, including personnel from industry, academia, government in Japan, and foreign embassies in Tokyo as well.
The issue of "the boundary of the firm" has become more than ever a crucial strategic challenge in the fields where S&T is rapidly developing, such as the biotechnology industry. Also, active cooperation between industry and academia is becoming a prerequisite for a country to sustain innovation. Given this climate, world-class researchers and businessmen in the biotechnology industry made presentations related to the current status and problems of cooperation between industry and academia, corporate partnerships, venture businesses, etc. Nearly 200 people attended this conference, which was held in Tokyo.
Contribution of technology foresight to S&T policies has come to the forefront in recent years. Third generation technology foresight is under way around the world, driven by technology users from every corner of society. Under these circumstances, the said conference was held in Tokyo with about 400 attendees. Nearly 20 experts from 12 countries, including Japan, and also three international organizations made presentations on the status of their activities, etc.
Participants discussed a new image of the S&T system, referring to the progress of collaboration among industry, academia and government and the increased influences of S&T on the society. Case studies on this issue were presented by the participants from nine countries, including Japan, and one international organization. The conference was held in Tokyo and was attended by 187 people.
